Chinese Cultivation Terms, Explained

15 entries · global-server edition

Cultivation terms describe a body being rebuilt over decades, not a levelling curve. Learn the fifteen words that carry the system — qi, dantian, jingmai, linggen, jindan, dujie, zongmen, fabao, plus spirit stones, pills and ascension — and the progress screens in most Chinese games start making sense.

Start with the summary, then read the entry you need. Every definition below is the general cultural term; how a specific game implements it belongs to that game's own guide.

THE FIVE STOPS ON A CULTIVATION SCREEN Qi Dantian Jingmai Jindan Dujie Breath you gather and refine. Not a fuel meter. Where the breath is stored. A centre, not a slot. The routes it travels. Channels, not blood vessels. The point where qi condenses. A stage, not loot. The trial that tests the stage. Scheduled, not optional.
Read top to bottom as one loop: gather, store, route, condense, test. Games rename the stages constantly but rarely change the order.

Qi

qi · breath

Qi is breath and vital energy. You are born with some, gather more, and refine it through practice.

English UIqi / energy / mana
Do not readIt as a mana bar. Qi is closer to a trained bodily state than to a resource consumed by spells, which is why exhaustion in these settings looks like illness rather than an empty gauge.
In gamesUsually a spent resource, a passive stat, or a bar that regenerates with rest. When a game splits “inner” and “outer” qi, it is separating refined breath from raw physical force.

Dantian

dan tian · elixir field

A dantian is a storage centre where qi collects — usually the one below the navel.

English UIcore / energy core
Do not readIt as a physical organ or an inventory slot. It is a functional centre that practice develops, and in most stories it cannot simply be “equipped” with a better version.
In gamesShows up as a core upgrade path, a resonance slot, or the place a game marks as your character's weak point in a boss mechanic. Damage to it usually means loss of progress, not just health.
RelatedQi, Jindan

Jingmai

jing mai · channels

Jingmai are the channels that carry qi. Blocked channels mean stalled power, pain, or both.

English UImeridians / channels
Do not readIt as the circulatory system. Meridians and blood vessels are described with different vocabularies and fixed with different methods; a “blocked meridian” in fiction is rarely a medical condition.
In gamesOften a node map, a damage route, or a stat tree you open in order. Unblocking a channel is a progress step, and the order usually matters more than the count.
RelatedQi, Dantian

Linggen

ling gen · spirit root

Linggen is inborn affinity — the root that decides which qi you can use and how fast you grow.

English UIspirit root / aptitude
Do not readIt as a skill unlock or a talent tree. It is closer to a starting attribute — sometimes a disability, sometimes an advantage nobody recognises until later.
In gamesFrequently a rolled starting trait, a re-roll target, or a gate that explains why one build can use fire techniques and another cannot. Elemental “roots” are the most common implementation.
RelatedQi, Zongmen

Jindan

jin dan · golden core

Jindan is the stage where qi condenses into a core. It is the clearest rank line in the genre.

English UIgolden core / core
Do not readIt as a loot item sitting in your bag. The core is internal and is usually described as being “formed” or “broken”, not picked up and worn.
In gamesOften a realm name on the character sheet, and sometimes a visible object in a cutscene. When a game does make it an item, it is usually a consumable used to advance someone else's stage.
RelatedDantian, Dujie

Dujie

du jie · crossing the trial

Dujie is the trial at a realm breakthrough: thunder, lightning, and a test of body and will.

English UItribulation / heavenly trial
Do not readIt as a boss you can skip or farm. The trial is a scheduled consequence of progress, and the drama is usually that the character cannot avoid it by waiting.
In gamesThe template for every “breakthrough” event: a scripted storm, a solo instance, a survival timer. Games often add failure states, because the source material treats failure as real.
RelatedJindan, Mo

Zongmen

zong men · sect

A zongmen is a sect: doctrine, hierarchy, land, and a lineage of teachers. Joining one is a political act.

English UIsect / clan
Do not readIt as a player guild. A guild is a voluntary group of equals; a zongmen has ranks, elders, rules, rivalries, and usually property that can be lost.
In gamesOften a faction hub, a reputation ladder, or a base-building layer. The plot almost always includes internal politics and a rival sect, because that is what the form supplies.

Fabao

fa bao · treasure

A fabao is a refined treasure bound to its owner, often with a will of its own.

English UIartifact / treasure
Do not readIt as a rarity tier or a stat roll. A fabao is defined by refinement and recognition: it may refuse a wielder, need feeding, or improve only after years of use.
In gamesOften a bound weapon with its own upgrade tree, or an item that has to be “recognised” before it unlocks. The sentient-treasure trope is the usual source of companion-style gear.
RelatedZongmen, Jing

Zhuji

zhu ji · foundation

Zhuji, Foundation Establishment, is where gathered qi becomes the stable base every realm above is built on.

Do not readIt as a beginner rank or a tutorial completion. It is a change of state: before it, qi is gathered; after it, qi can be structured.
English UI“Foundation Establishment”, “Foundation realm”, sometimes “core formation” when a build blurs the labels.
In gamesRealm ladders and level gates. When a game names its second tier “Foundation”, this is the source.
RelatedQi, Jindan

Yuanying

yuan ying · nascent soul

Yuanying is the Nascent Soul: your refined self, shaped like an infant, able to leave your body.

Do not readIt as a pet, a summon or a separate character. The soul is yours; losing it is a catastrophe, not a party wipe.
English UI“Nascent Soul”, “soul form”, “spirit infant”.
In gamesSoul projection, revive mechanics and out-of-body scouting. A game that lets you fight as a small floating copy is borrowing this stage.
RelatedJindan, Dujie

Zouhuo Rumo

zou huo ru mo · qi deviation

Zouhuo rumo is qi deviation: the practice reverses and damages body or mind. The failure is internal.

Do not readIt as possession or a curse that needs an exorcist. Nothing external entered; the practitioner's own process broke.
English UI“qi deviation”, “deviation”, “berserk state”, “internal injury”.
In gamesDebuffs, berserk phases and failed breakthrough events. Usually triggered by rushing a stage or using a technique above your realm.
RelatedQi, Mo

Fulu

fu lu · talisman

A fulu is a written command to a spirit. The hand that draws it matters; a copy is just paper.

Do not readIt as a spell scroll that anyone can read aloud. The talisman works by authority and correct form, which is why games make you learn the pattern.
English UI“talisman”, “charm”, “paper seal”.
In gamesConsumable buffs, seals, ward traps and crafting recipes. Rarity usually tracks how specific the command is.
RelatedFabao, Zongmen

Lingshi

ling shi · spirit stone

Lingshi are spirit stones: the currency of the cultivation world, mined from veins and spent on pills, gear and tuition.

Do not readIt as a gem to sell for gold. The stone is money and fuel at once — sects price techniques in it, and cultivators absorb it to train.
English UI“spirit stones”, “crystals”, “jade”, sometimes “cultivation points”.
In gamesA second currency beside gold, with its own shop: sect exchanges, pill vendors, formation upkeep. When a game prices a technique in stones, it is pricing knowledge as a resource.
RelatedDanyao, Zongmen

Danyao

dan yao · elixir pill

Danyao are pills: graded medicine that carries a cultivator past a bottleneck, with a toxin cost at low grades.

Do not readIt as a health potion. Pills are taken on a schedule, often weeks before a breakthrough, and the wrong grade can set progress back.
English UI“pills”, “elixirs”, “consumables”, “breakthrough items”.
In gamesBreakthrough quests, timed buffs and alchemy systems. Low-grade pills stack a debuff usually called pill toxin, which is why the expensive grade exists.
RelatedLingshi, Dujie

Feisheng

fei sheng · ascending

Feisheng is ascension: the final step, where a cultivator leaves the mortal world behind.

Do not readIt as a prestige reset or a level-100 milestone. The character does not get stronger in this world; the story removes them from it.
English UI“ascension”, “ascending”, “transcendence”.
In gamesEndings, server-wide announcements, NG+ premises, or a character who literally leaves the map. When a game promises ascension, expect removal more than a new tier.

16 FAQ

Is qi the same as mana?

No. Mana is usually a pool spent by spells and refilled by potions. Qi is a trained bodily state; it can be depleted, but the recovery is rest and practice rather than a drink.

Does every character have a linggen?

In most fiction, yes — but not everyone's is usable. The common plot is a character with a weak or damaged root who finds a path around it, which is why the term carries so much narrative weight.

Is jindan an item I can farm?

Usually not. It is a stage of the body. When a game does turn it into an object, it is normally a one-off consumable used to push a breakthrough rather than repeatable loot.

Is dujie a boss fight?

It is a trial, and games render trials as fights. The difference is agency: a boss is content you choose to attempt, while dujie is the price of having progressed.
